What you need to know about the new EU Border rules

If you’re planning a holiday to Europe in the next couple of years, there are two big changes coming that you’ll want to know about: EES and ETIAS.

Don’t worry - it’s not as scary as it sounds. I’ve broken it down so you can travel with confidence. And as always, if you book through NC Travel, I’ll keep you updated every step of the way.

What’s changing? ✈️

There are two new systems being introduced by the EU for travellers from countries like the UK:

  1. Entry/ Exit System (EES)

  2. European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS)

EU Entry/ Exit System (EES) – Coming October 2025

Think of EES as the EU’s new way of tracking who comes in and out – replacing those old-fashioned passport stamps.

When you travel to or from most EU countries (basically anywhere in the Schengen Area), the border staff will:

✅ Scan your passport

📸 Take a photo of your face

🖐️ Scan your fingerprints

It’s all about increasing security and making border crossings more efficient. But in the early days, it might mean a bit of a longer wait at passport control. So give yourself plenty of time when travelling after October 2025!

European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) – Coming late 2026

ETIAS is a bit like the USA’s ESTA or the UK’s ETA – a pre-travel authorisation you’ll need to fill out before visiting Europe.

Once it launches, you’ll need an ETIAS if you’re:

  • Travelling to any of the 30 EU countries in the Schengen Area

  • Visiting for less than 90 days in any 180-day period

  • A citizen of a visa-free country (like the UK)

Here’s what you need to know:

💷 It’ll cost around £6 (€7)

📆 Valid for three years

🌍 Covers multiple trips – so you only apply once, not every time you go

But – and this is important – ETIAS is not live yet. So:

🚫 You don’t need to apply yet

🌐 The official website is www.europa.eu/etias – and it’s not taking applications yet

⚠️ Watch out for scam websites pretending to offer ETIAS – if you’re ever unsure, just ask me!

Nikki’s quick travel tips 🧳

  • EES will start from October 2025 – so get ready for facial scans and fingerprinting at borders

  • ETIAS starts in late 2026 – and it’ll be a must-have before you go

  • Don’t fall for scam sites – ETIAS applications haven’t opened yet

  • Give yourself extra time at the airport when these systems first launch

  • Book with a trusted travel agent (me!) so you’re always in the know

Final word from Nikki

Honestly, it might sound like a faff now – but once it’s all up and running, these systems will help make travel smoother and safer. And you don’t have to worry about remembering it all - I’ve got your back!

Whether you’re planning a cheeky city break, a dreamy beach week, or something more adventurous, I’ll make sure you’re fully sorted and stress-free before you head off.
