Client Blog: Romance in Italy for our anniversary

We asked Nikki to arrange a short trip to Venice and Florence as a celebration. We usually want to be away from the tourist areas if possible, which is not easy in Venice.

We flew BA Business then took a private water taxi to the Mori d’Oriente 4* hotel very close to the 'Ghetto'. The name actually comes from the Jewish Quarter here.

It was very small and luxurious. Instead of the usual tourist ride in a gondola, Nikki had arranged for us to have a lesson in rowing one during the evening, which was so memorable.

We had a glass of wine in the gondola repair shop then set off down the small canals, learning the trick of one oar motion. I even rowed across the Grand Canal before tying up down a narrow byway and being taken into a tiny locals bar for sardines, wine, meatballs and other tapas style food before returning - not something we will ever forget.

The next day we did the tourist bit: St Marks Square, Doges Palace, etc. and then we watched a Jewish wedding and had a beautiful meal in the square watching the reception celebrations.

Then it was our anniversary and Nikki had managed to get us a reservation at one of the world’s most iconic restaurants, Locanda Cipriani on Torcello island. She had also arranged our water taxi.

Once we returned, it was off to the opera and La Traviata performed in a very large house where you move between rooms for each scene and more champagne. Another truly memorable day.

Next morning, we travelled first class by train to Florence and then took a limo to the 5* Golden Tower Hotel and Spa. Wow! This was followed by a lovely day walking around then an amazing ten course meal at a lovely fish restaurant.

The following day was a tour of vineyards before flying home.

Another great trip with so many personal touches organised by Nikki from NC Travel.
