A journey from Athens to Poros: Amanda’s family adventure

When Amanda reached out to me, it was extra special. I had first met her many years ago when I was the toastmaster at her daughter Eleanor’s wedding at stunning Leeds Castle. Over the years, I have had the privilege of arranging holidays for the Wellard family, including Eleanor, her husband, and their extended family. This time, however, it was lovely to be planning a trip for Amanda herself and the family of the Underwoods.
Amanda admitted that she had developed “holiday blindness”. I was able to help her cut through the confusion of online offers and focus on exactly what she wanted.
Although she hadn’t considered the hustle and bustle of Athens, when I paired it with the calm beauty of Poros, it worked perfectly.
Top tip: if you suffer from prickly heat, Greece’s climate - especially on the islands - is ideal. The dry heat is a lifesaver.
Athens: A warm welcome and timeless history

We began our journey with a three-night stay in Athens at Casa Des Hermanos, a charming two-bedroom apartment in the heart of the city. Having two proper bedrooms was essential for us as a family, and this apartment gave us just that, along with a cosy lounge and all the comforts we could need.
Our host, Anton, was truly wonderful. Before arrival, he worked closely with Nikki and provided us with detailed instructions and even videos to make sure we had no trouble accessing the property. When we walked in, we were greeted with thoughtful touches such as fresh fruit, bottled water, snacks, wine and beer. It was a real home-from-home.
Anton’s kindness went far beyond check-in. On departure day, he carried our luggage to the waiting taxi, sent us off with delicious cream-filled croissants, and even reunited my husband with a jacket he had accidentally left behind. He also gave us a lovely gift to take home, the kind of personal gesture that makes travel extra special. He even invited us to visit his new apartment, Santorini Caves, when it is completed.
During our time in Athens, we soaked up the city’s vibrant atmosphere, but of course, the highlight was visiting the Acropolis and Parthenon. To stand among ruins that have towered over the city for centuries, with incredible views across Athens, was both moving and unforgettable.
Poros: The island escape
After the energy of Athens, we slowed the pace with a trip to Poros, just 45 minutes by SeaCat ferry from Piraeus. The journey itself was a pleasure, with comfortable seating, smooth sailing, and views of rugged little islands and distant mountains as we cut across the Aegean.
Arriving in Poros felt like stepping into a postcard. As the ferry pulled into the harbour, hillside homes painted in shades of cream and terracotta seemed to tumble down to the water’s edge, with the famous clock tower watching over it all. The charm of Poros was immediate.
The island has a wonderful mix of life. Along the waterfront, you will find tavernas, cafés and small shops. Around the coastline are some of the most inviting beaches. We especially loved Love Bay, with its crystal-clear waters, and the beach at the New Aegli Hotel, where sunbeds were complimentary as long as you enjoyed a snack or drink.
Cascade Holiday Resort: A peaceful haven

Our base in Poros was the Cascade Holiday Resort, a hidden gem surrounded by greenery and tranquillity. The rooms were spotless and cleaned daily, the pool was a haven for lazy afternoons, and the whole place had a calm, relaxed atmosphere that made it easy to switch off.
What really made Cascade special was the family who own it. Brothers Stathis and Constantinos went above and beyond for us, taking us to a rooftop restaurant that we would never have found otherwise. Whether we wanted to head into Poros town, visit Love Bay or see some of the island’s cultural sights, they were always there with a smile, making everything easy and stress-free.
Food is such an important part of Greek life, and we were lucky to have Odyssey Bistro just a short walk from Cascade. This became our favourite restaurant on the island, with delicious food, warm service, and that laid-back Greek atmosphere that makes every meal an occasion.
The only downside to Cascade was that there were no tea bags or kettles in the rooms so we bought one!
Exploring Poros: Monasteries and magical sunsets

One of the highlights of our stay was visiting the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, perched on the hillside overlooking the island. Dating back to the 18th century, this monastery is still home to monks today and is one of Poros’ most spiritual and serene places. Inside, the iconography and atmosphere are incredibly moving, and outside, the views across the pine forests and sea are breathtaking.
For anyone planning to visit, it is important to remember the dress code. Women must cover shoulders and knees, so carrying a scarf or wrap is a good idea. Men should also avoid shorts. Modesty is essential as a mark of respect.
No trip to Poros would be complete without time on the water, and we were lucky enough to enjoy both a private boat trip around the island and a sunset cruise with John Nakis. The daytime trip took us to hidden coves and beaches that can only be reached by boat, while the sunset cruise was pure magic. Watching the sun sink into the horizon, glass of wine in hand and a plate of local cheeses to share, was an experience we will never forget.
The Perfect Balance
What made this holiday truly special was the contrast. Athens gave us culture, history and energy, while Poros offered relaxation, beauty and calm. Together, they created the perfect balance. I was unsure what I wanted at first but Nikki focused me. Although I hadn’t originally considered the hustle and bustle of Athens, when she paired it with Poros, it really worked.
From thoughtful accommodation to seamless transfers, friendly hosts and unique experiences, everything was expertly organised by Nikki. We came home feeling refreshed, full of memories and ready to talk about when we might return. We are hoping to see Stathis when he comes to the World Travel Market in London, and we have invited him to join us for a proper roast dinner. Without Nikki, we would not have met such lovely people.
Nikki organised the most wonderful and unique holiday, and the most beautiful memories were made. We cannot fault this trip. Well done Nikki and thank you!
