The importance of travel insurance - from someone who knows...

On 30 May 2026, while on holiday in Zante, I was involved in a boat accident and fractured my spine. Thankfully, the fracture is stable and I am recovering well. The next stage is gradually rebuilding my movement, flexibility and strength.


My accident highlighted just how important it is to have suitable travel insurance and to make sure the essential information can be found quickly in an emergency.


I was extremely fortunate to have comprehensive travel insurance through my bank, but not every policy offers the same level of cover. There are some excellent providers available, but please do your homework and never choose a policy based on price alone.


Before travelling, check:


  • Does the cancellation cover reflect the full value of your holiday?

  • Is the policy valid for Europe only or worldwide?

  • Are all existing medical conditions declared and covered?

  • Does it include cruises, skiing or any other specialist holiday?

  • Are your planned activities covered, including boat trips, water sports and excursions?

  • Does it provide adequate medical, repatriation and emergency assistance?

  • Are your luggage, personal belongings and mobile devices sufficiently covered?


I also recommend carrying a printed A4 emergency information sheet containing your travel insurance policy number, the emergency assistance telephone number, next of kin and any important medical information.


Add a copy of the photograph page of each traveller’s passport to the sheet, then take a photograph of the completed document to keep securely on your phone. If you are travelling separately at any point, make sure everyone has access to the information.


Most importantly, arrange your insurance as soon as you book. Cancellation cover begins when the policy starts, not when you depart.
