South Wales Short Break

With the growing popularity of staycations and UK holidays, I love Titan’s South Wales short break.

South Wales offers a lot for a short break. There’s Cardiff, a lively city that’s existed for over two millennia. There’s the gorgeous Brecon Beacons, a must for anyone who loves wild scenery. There are fantastic castles - Caerphilly Castle sits in dramatic ruin in the middle of a lake, while Cardiff Castle still stands strong in the city’s centre. Other highlights include the heritage Brecon Mountain Railway, the hard-working Royal Mint and an abundance of other houses and manors that recognise the region’s frictions and glory.

Your holiday includes:

3 excursions and visits

  • The Royal Mint Experience and Brecon Mountain Railway

  • Cardiff city tour and Llancaiach Fawr Manor

Day 1 Cwmbran, Newport

Titan’s VIP door-to-door travel service collects you from home for your journey to Cwmbran, near Newport. Arrive at the hotel between 4pm and 5pm, where the remainder of the day is free to settle in.

Day 2 The Royal Mint Experience & Brecon Mountain Railway

Money makes the world go round - and the Royal Mint has been making it for the last 1,100 years. As well as striking sterling, they’ve made commemorative coins and the medals for the military plus commissions for over 100 other countries. Take a tour behind the scenes to discover how the world’s leading export mint, and coins, have changed through the centuries.

Afterwards, head to the beautiful, rugged Brecon Beacons, streaked with lakes, waterfalls and the occasional tiny village or stone ruin. Take your seat for a steam-pulled journey on the Brecon Mountain Railway, along the Taf Fechan Reservoir and up to Torpantau, the summit of the original Brecon & Merthyr Railway. Before journeying back, you have the opportunity to see where the steam locomotives and carriages are repaired.

Day 3 Cardiff & Llancaiach Fawr Manor

Board a coach for a guided tour of Cardiff, and enjoy some free time discovering the diverse influences which turned the Roman settlement into the success it is today. You can sense its history - its ancient castle is a good place to start - but the university, great shops, thriving pubs and national Principality Stadium (home of Welsh Rugby Union) all keep this city alive.

Later, visit Llancaiach Fawr Manor. This unassuming home was built with 4ft-thick walls - considered necessary during the turbulent Tudor reigns. It’s been restored and furnished as it would’ve been in 1645, when the Justice of the Peace lived here.

Day 4 National Trust Tredegar House & Caerphilly Castle

From its humble medieval beginnings, Tredegar House has seen many changes through the years. Today, you’ll see 17th-century glitz in the Gilt Room, enjoy a little eccentricity in the 1930s bedrooms, and imagine the clamour of pans in the Great Kitchen as the staff prepare for the next big feast.

Ten miles down the road, and several centuries apart, the biggest castle in Wales was constructed. Even in ruin, the thick, grey stone walls of Caerphilly Castle, rising straight out of the centre of its lake, would halt any potential invaders. Take time to imagine life in this frontline fortress, and ponder over the leaning tower - even wonkier than Pisa’s!

Day 5 Cwmbran, Newport

You’ll be collected at 10am by your Titan vehicle for the journey home.

If you are thinking of a coach holiday, sit back and allow us to book it for you – we are with you every step of the way!
